Earsel Glen Maynard
1933—2023
After suffering from COPD for years, Earsel Glen Maynard, age 90, of McArthur, Ohio, passed peacefully in his sleep at Fairfield Medical Center on Tuesday, Oct. 31, 2023.
Glen served in the Korean War from 1953-55 for the US Army ranked PFC(T). After retiring from Owens, Illinois in Columbus, Ohio, in 1990, he took up an old “hobby” of whittling from his childhood and his talent for wood carving is now world-renowned. He and his beloved wife, Merline, traveled America selling his carvings at festivals and competing in events until 2013.
Glen was one of the few individuals blessed with many talents: wood carving, leather works, skilled shot, comedian, storyteller, and singer. His greatest talent, though, was as a teacher of how to be the loving, ethical and humanitarian person that everyone needs to attempt to replicate as he humbly led his life in the manner that he felt was what God would want him to lead.
Glen leaves behind his beloved wife of 42 years, Merline, McArthur, Ohio; daughter, Rhonda Ward-Maynard, 55 years old of Clearwater, Florida; grandson, Anthony Nathaniel Cline, 34 years old of Plant City, Florida (wife, Kaylen); great-granddaughter, Sofie Lynn, age 12; sister-in-law, Christine Maynard of Inez, Kentucky; along with many nieces, nephews and friends.
Glen was preceded in death by his brothers, Homer Maynard, Elza Lee Maynard and Estel Maynard; sisters, Eloise Maynard Parsley and Jean Maynard Smith; his parents, Bill Maynard and Opal Buckley Maynard; sister-in-law, Betty Maynard; and brothers-in-law, Elmer Maynard, Leonard Maynard and Nathan Jay Maynard.
Glen will be cremated through the Garrett Cardaras Funeral Home, 201 W. High Street, McArthur. No service is scheduled at this time. A Celebration of Life will be established and communicated to friends and family.
