INEZ — It is almost time for children to don their favorite costumes and take to the streets to fill their bags with tasty treats. Martin and all surrounding counties, except one, have planned Trick or Treat for the same night.

Martin, Floyd, Johnson, Magoffin and Pike counties in Kentucky and Mingo County, including the Town of Kermit, in West Virginia will observe door-to-door Trick-or-Treating Tuesday, Oct. 31, from 6-8 p.m.

Lawrence County and the City of Louisa will have Trick or Treat Saturday, Oct. 28, from 5-8 p.m.

Across the river in Fort Gay, West Virginia, Oct. 28 is also the date for Trick or Treat, but the time is set for 5-7 p.m.

The City of Inez will offer a sensory-friendly Trick or Treat from 4-6 p.m. Oct. 31. Activities include story time, crafts, games and songs. Each session can accommodate three children, with sessions scheduled every 20 minutes. To reserve a time, contact Inez clerk Lisa Mollett at 606-298-4602 during regular business hours.

As always, area law enforcement reminds travelers on the roadways to slow down and use extreme caution.

“We recommend that you stay in areas you are familiar with,” Martin County Sheriff John Kirk said. “The safest locations are those that are well populated and well lit.”

The sheriff added, “Never allow your child to eat any of their candy unless you have inspected it first. Only accept homemade treats from people with whom you are acquainted and trust, and make sure you dispose of any candy that is not covered or with ripped packaging. It’s better to be safe than sorry. If you are handing out candy at your residence or business, make sure your walkway is free of debris or other trip hazards and that you have good lighting.”
