Logan flight nurse to be honored at annual Stars of Life Awards Ceremony in Washington

LOGAN, W.Va. — Ian Carroll, a flight nurse with Air Evac Lifeteam in Logan, was named one of 32 Global Medical Response (GMR) Stars of Life. The Stars of Life program honors EMS first responders who have completed extraordinary acts of service for their patients, colleagues, communities or the EMS profession. Honorees from across the country will be recognized at the American Ambulance Association (AAA) Stars of Life Awards Ceremony in Washington, Nov. 5-8.

“This award is among the highest honors an EMS professional can receive,” said Marty Hurley, base manager for Air Evac Lifeteam. “Ian is a rock star. He was nominated for his dedication and expertise, which saved the lives of two patients in two separate accidents — one whose vehicle ran off into a river and another who was injured in a mining truck crash. In both situations, Ian, without any hesitation, intervened to save those patients’ lives.”

Carroll is excited to be honored as one of the 2023 Stars of Life.

“I consider it a great privilege to be selected for this award,” said Carroll. “EMS is one of the toughest jobs out there, primarily because you’re never really off duty. When someone needs your help, whether you’re on the job or not, if you’re in EMS, your first instinct is to stop whatever you’re doing and help that person.”

Each GMR Star of Life represents an incredible story of service and dedication in every area of the EMS industry and is selected by their peers in an extensive nomination process.

Nick Loporcaro, president and CEO of GMR, said, “Our Stars are all exceptional EMS professionals who are very deserving of this important recognition. They represent the thousands of GMR first responders who have committed to a profession of service to others. On behalf of all GMR team members, we send our sincerest congratulations and appreciation to all our 2023 Stars.”
