WARFIELD — Martin County Middle School Lady Cards concluded the regular basketball season with a convincing 36-15 win over South Floyd, extending their record to 18-2.

Before the A-team’s game, the Lady Cards celebrated 8th-grade night, paying tribute to their seven 8th graders: Desiree Gullett, Maci Maynard, Lexie Cline, Chloe Moore, Caylee Moore, Bri Muncy and Bailey Scott. The coaching staff honored these eighth graders in the final home game of their middle school career.

Coach Boo Newsome spoke highly of the group.

“This is a very special group, and if they stick together, they will make a lot of noise in the 15th Region,” Newsome predicted. “They have a lot of talent and work together really well. They will be sorely missed.”

In a display of support and unity, all three elementary basketball coaches rescheduled their games to bring their teams out for the Lady Cards and their 8th graders. Coach Newsome expressed her gratitude, thanking the elementary coaches and players.

The Lady Cards set the pace from the first whistle, leading 15-0 at the end of the first quarter. With Gullett spearheading the offense with eight points, including two 3-pointers and a basket, Annaleigh Davis contributed four points, and Maynard added three.

The Martin County defense held South Floyd scoreless in the first quarter, setting the tone for the game.

Maynard continued to rack up points on the offensive glass, scoring eight points in the second quarter, while Gullett added three. By halftime the Lady Cards had a commanding 26-4 lead.

Maynard’s strong performance continued in the third quarter as she added six points. At the end of the frame, the Lady Cards had a 32-10 lead.

Maynard led the way for the Lady Cards with 17 points, followed closely by Gullet’s 15. Davis chipped in four.

On South Floyd’s side, Younce stood out with six points, Engle contributed five and Moore delivered four.

The Lady Cards are gearing up for the Middle School State Tournament in Lexington following the fall break.

“I am so proud of these girls,” said Coach Newsome. “They ended the regular season on a high note before the break. The future looks bright for the Lady Cards program.”
