INEZ — Martin County’s rich heritage and stunning landscapes now greet visitors in vibrant detail at the site of the former jailhouse in Inez, thanks to a newly erected “Welcome to Martin County” sign.

This recent addition, commissioned by the Martin County Economic Development Authority (EDA), adorns the side of the historic structure, setting the stage for a future in tourism and economic development.

Carolea Mills, EDA director and deputy judge/executive, once again showcased her visionary leadership by bringing this project to life.

Mills teamed up with local photography sensation Andrew Gess, tasking him with capturing the essence of Martin County in photographs.

Gess rose to the challenge, producing breathtaking images of elk, horses, the Tug River, the historic Warfield railroad bridge, and inviting adventure trails. All these pictures now form the visual mosaic that welcomes residents and visitors alike.

Speaking on the project, Mills shared her optimism for the county’s direction.

“Our board of leaders is committed to assisting the county in bringing economic growth to our area,” Mills said. “This sign symbolizes a collaborative effort to develop a stronger initiative to promote tourism, downtown revitalization, small business opportunities, and to attract job creation.”

She added, “We are encouraged for our future and look forward to what’s ahead for our beautiful Martin County.”
