WARFIELD — Martin County Middle School brought its A-game to the court Thursday as the Lady Cards dominated Adams 50-28.
The Lady Cards faced a challenging start in the first quarter, clinging to a narrow 10-9 lead as the quarter ended. Desirae Gullett scored six points for the Lady Cards, while Annaleigh Davis chipped in with four.
MCMS coach Boo Newsome’s team changed up their defense in the second quarter, limiting the Blackcats to three points. The Lady Cards entered the locker room at halftime with a 17-12 lead.
“I thought we would be a little rusty from our short layoff, but the girls responded,” Newsome commented.
The Lady Cards showed energy in the third quarter, scoring 19 points to extend the lead to 36-16.
The trio of Gullett, Davis and Maci Maynard combined for 17 points, effectively breaking the game open. Maynard’s precise long outlet passes set the stage for several breakaway baskets.
Maynard and Davis encountered early foul trouble, prompting Newsome to call on her bench to maintain the momentum.
“I love my team,” a happy coach Newsome said of the win. “They have an opportunity to be a very special group. They are very unselfish from top to bottom and have great team chemistry.”
Gullett led the Lady Cards with 18 points, followed by Davis with 16 and Maynard added 12.
For Adams, Lakien Stephens scored five points, while Candace Allen had six, Whitney Howard nine and Johnna Ward eight.
Martin County is 14-1 on the season.
