INEZ — Martin County High School girls soccer team is off to a great start this season. The Lady Cards are currently 5-2 but are 3-0 in regional play.
Martin County played regional rival Belfry in the Kentucky Farm Bureau Cup game Aug. 14 at Cardinal Stadium. The Lady Cards looked ready for the regional competition, but adding a possible trophy at the end made them work harder.
Martin County looked to score early against Belfry, but the Lady Pirates defense was up to task, keeping the Lady Cards scoreless for the first 15 minutes of the game.
Senior Sophie McCoy stepped up big this game and was the first to find the net to take the lead 1-0. Fellow senior Caitlyn Horn was also determined not to lose, adding two goals of her own by halftime and a 3-0 lead.
The second half saw the Lady Cards offense step up big time. Forward Laura Hale would not be denied a goal on this night, adding two by the end. Freshmen Faith Caldwell added to the count with two goals by the final whistle.
In the end however, the KFB Cup offensive player of the game went to Sophie, who had a haul, scoring four goals in the game.
Kentucky Farm Bureau also awarded defensive player of the game, which went to senior Tamara Workman.
“I’m so excited to see the girls win the game and hold up the trophy,” Martin County coach Steven Gauze said. “We have been working very hard, and it really showed during the Kentucky Farm Bureau Cup. Congratulations to Sophie and Tamara on their awards. I expect that extra effort in big games from seniors because they know what’s at stake. If we can continue to work hard and improve, who knows what we could do this season?”
The Lady Cards start this week at home Monday against Letcher County Central. They are on the road Thursday for a big regional matchup against Johnson Central.
