KERMIT, W.Va. — Those searching for a thrilling experience with a dash of noise, unexpected crashes and some light-hearted banter will find the Kermit Volunteer Fire Department’s Demolition Derby the perfect destination.

Fire Chief Wilburn “Hawky” Preece has been overjoyed by the robust turnout of attendees and competitors at the initial two derby events this summer. With high hopes for the upcoming derby on Sept. 2, he anticipates even larger crowds, especially as families scout for entertaining activities over the Labor Day weekend.

“We wanted to offer something different, something that no one else in the local area is doing,” Preece said. “I think we made a wise decision when we settled on the idea of a demolition derby. We have heard nothing but compliments from the public. They say they definitely want us to keep this going.”

The fire department’s inaugural events saw around 12 local cars participating, alongside several from neighboring areas. The enthusiasm hints at growing numbers with each subsequent event.

The event’s location is about one and a half miles up Marrowbone Creek on the historic ballfield. The gates swing open at noon, with an admission fee of $10. Children aged 12 or below, accompanied by an adult, can enter free of charge. Those wishing to get a closer look with a pit pass will have to shell out an additional $10.

Competitors can join the derby for $50 per car.

The derby’s main event starts at 4 p.m., showcasing categories like small-car, youth, large-car, and the riveting Gut n’ Go class. Adding to the fun, a free power wheel class for kids is on the agenda, with every young participant receiving a trophy.

Safety is paramount. All drivers, except those in the Gut n’ Go class, need to install a roll bar. Drivers must also don helmets and seat belts. Cars have to be free from plastic parts and windshields. While cars with gas tanks in front of the back axle can participate without modifications, those with tanks behind the axle must have a fuel cell in the back seat.

Hungry spectators can satiate their appetites at the concession stands, offering delicious hot dogs and other snacks. It is worth noting that alcoholic beverages are prohibited.

Funds collected will be channeled toward advanced training and equipment for firefighters and first responders.

“If you’re a demolition derby fan, then you will love our events,” remarked Preece. “And if you’ve never been to one, I’m confident you’ll leave as a fan and want to come back again and again.”
