PIKEVILLE — Martin County got a 14-7 win over the Betsy Layne Bobcats in a preseason scrimmage Saturday at Shelby Valley High School.
The scrimmage was played under a running clock format.
Senior running back Madden Miller played big on both sides of the ball. Miller had eight carries for 85 yards on offense, eight solo tackles and three assisted tackles.
Senior Brock Messer had six carries for 75 rushing yards, capped off by a crucial touchdown.
Quarterback Jackson Miller had three carries for 16 rushing yards.
The Cardinal defense disrupted the Bobcat offensive flow the entire game and proved too much for Betsy Layne. Devan Maynard had four solo tackles and two assisted tackles.
Head Coach Josh Muncy spoke about his team’s performance, particularly on the defensive end.
“We got some good work in defensively,” Muncy said. “I wish the format was a little different. We didn’t get to run much offense. They played with a running clock and no play clock, so we only had six minutes of offense in the first half. But the time we did have on offense was very productive.”
Martin County opens the regular season Friday at home against the Hazard Bulldogs. Kickoff is 7:30 p.m.
