Martin County Middle School Lady Cardinals continued their winning ways this past weekend and showed why they will be a team to be reckoned with in the future. The Lady Cards secured wins over WB Muncy, Hindman and May Valley to extend their winning streak to seven straight.
The B-team also came away with a win over WB Muncy. Below is a recap of the games.
MC 37, WBM 10
WOOTEN — Martin County Middle School dominated the WB Muncy Lady Pirates 37-10 in a game Friday at WB Muncy Elementary.
The Lady Cardinals took an 8-2 lead right out of the gate and never looked back.
The Lady Pirates struggled to find the basket early.
Martin County continued to build momentum and had a 14-4 advantage at the end of the second quarter.
The third quarter saw more of the same as the Lady Cards were ahead 26-7 at the end of the frame.
The Lady Cards maintained their focus and sailed to the final score.
Annaleigh Davis scored 14 points to lead Martin County. Desirae Gullett turned in a solid performance with 11 points, Maci Maynard contributed six, Caylee Moore finished with four and KK Maynard added two.
Gabriella Wolfe tallied four points, Kyleigh Napier and Karlee Adams each added two, while Kayleigh Hacker and Kaylee Caudill each added a point for the Lady Pirates.
With this victory, the Lady Cardinals improved their season record to 5-0.
Coach Newsome praised her team’s performance.
“These kids have worked hard all summer and it’s paying off. They keep improving with each game,” Newsome said.
The JV put up an impressive 22-12 win over WB Muncy.
Anna Hinkle put up an impressive 10 points, while Caylee Moore added six, Bri Muncy, Chloe Moore and KK Maynard contributed two apiece.
Karlee Adams led the Lady Pirates in scoring with five points, followed by Kyleigh Napier with three, Kiala Holbrook and Leyla Roberts each added two and Patience Wilder contributed one.
With this win the Lady Cards B-team remains unbeaten at 2-0.
MC 43, Hindman 34
EASTERN — The Martin County Middle School Lady Cards displayed their composure, securing an impressive win against Hindman 43-34 in a game Saturday at Floyd Central High School.
The Lady Cards controlled the tempo from the onset, never giving up the lead.
Annaleigh Davis led all scorers with an impressive 19 points for Martin County. Maci Maynard turned in a solid performance with 12 points, Desirae Gullett tossed in six, Chloe Moore chipped in four and KK Maynard added two.
“Team unity has been a key factor in our success so far, and I hope that continues throughout the year,” Coach Newsome said.
MC 27, MV 25
MARTIN — Martin County emerged victorious against May Valley 27-25 in a heart-pounding game Aug. 5.
The Lady Cards overcame the challenge of playing three games back-to-back games in less than 24 hours.
The teams exchanged leads several times, creating a great basketball atmosphere.
The Lady Cards trailed 25-23 in the game’s final moments.
Maci Maynard drew a foul and stepped to the free-throw line with 50 seconds left. She made one free throw to narrow the gap to one. With 17 seconds remaining, Annaleigh Davis was fouled and calmly sank both free throws to push the lady Cadrs in front 26-25.
The Lady Cards came up with the steal and Desirae Gullett sealed the victory by making one free throw with six seconds left.
Maci Maynard scored 12 points to lead Martin County. Annaleigh Davis contributed 10 points. Desirae Gullett added three and KK Maynard had a huge basket on an assist from Anna Hinkle for two.
The Lady Cards extended their undefeated streak to 7-0.
Coach Newsome credited her team for teamwork and their ability to overcome fatigue and deliver under pressure.
“The girls’ determination and composure in critical moments was the reason we pulled this one out,” Newsome said.
