INEZ — Martin County Middle School Lady Cardinals showed out Saturday, with the A-team going 4-0 and the B-team 1-0 in Rumble in the Mountains. The middle school preseason event took place at Martin County High School.
Games started at 9 a.m. and ran all day. Along with middle school teams, several elementary teams participated.
Below is a recap of the action.
MC 31, Paintsville 19
Martin County’s determination was evident right from the start as the Lady Cards dominated Paintsville 31-19.
The Lady Cards surged ahead in the opening quarter 12-6 and maintained the lead throughout the game.
Annaleigh Davis proved to be the standout performer for the Lady Cards. She scored an impressive 22 points to lead the offensive charge. Maci Maynard contributed five points, displaying her ability to create scoring opportunities for her teammates. Anna Hinkle and Bailee Scott each scored two points, showcasing their role in the Lady Cards victory.
McKinley Ramey of Paintsville demonstrated her offensive skills, leading the Lady Tigers with nine points. Kendall Short added four points, Ansley Aicle and Reagan Schmidt contributed three and two points, respectively, and Kate Lauffer contributed one.
Martin County coach Boo Newsome expressed pride in her team’s performance.
“The girls executed our game plan and played together, sharing the basketball,” Newsome said. “It’s rewarding to see their hard work pay off with a decisive win.”
MC 19, GC 15
The Martin County Lady Cards secured the second win of the day in a hard-fought battle with Greenup County 19-15.
Maci Maynard led the way for Martin County, scoring 10 points. Annaleigh Davis contributed five points, and Desirae Gullett and Bri Muncy each scored two points.
The Lady Cards teamwork enabled them to pull out the win in a closely contested game against Greenup County.
Coach Newsome praised her team’s effort.
“The girls are showing great determination and playing together as a team,” said Newsome. “The Lady Cards’ outstanding performance is setting the stage for an exciting season ahead.”
MC 28, BL 15
Playing in the third game of the day, Martin County Lady Cardinals never skipped a beat in defeating Betsy Layne 28-25.
The Lady Cards led from the opening whistle.
Annaleigh Davis led the scoring with 10 points, Maci Maynard and Desire Gullett contributed equally with eight points each, and Lexi Cline added two points. The Lady Cards Coach Newsome was proud of her team’s performance, “The girls played with a lot of heart,” Coach Newsome commented. “I’m proud of their effort and teamwork.’”
MC 19, JC 15
Martin County took on Jackson City in their fourth A-team game and claimed another hard-fought victory 19-15.
Standout Maci Maynard led the Lady Cardinal offense with 10 points, Annaleigh Davis contributed five points, and Desirae Gullet and Bri Muncy each scored two points.
“The girls have put a lot of work in this summer, and it is showing,” Coach Newsome said. “They were excited to play in front of their home event. I can’t wait to see what the rest of the season has in store.”
B-team
MC 13, Mullins 8
The Martin County Lady Cards B-team showcased their talent and teamwork, securing a victory against the Mullins B-team during the Rumble in the Mountains event.
KK Maynard led the scoring with seven points and Haileigh Smith contributed six.
