School starts Aug. 9 for Martin County students

CITIZEN STAFF REPORT

INEZ — With less than a month of summer vacation left, students in Martin County will soon return to the classroom. The school district has announced its academic calendar for the 2023-2024 school year, setting the date for students to return Aug. 9. Teachers, however, will be back in school even earlier, starting their year with professional development days Aug. 1-3 and 7, leading up to the official opening day Aug. 8.

The upcoming academic year will consist of 185 contract days. These include 170 days dedicated to instruction, four holidays, five professional learning days, four professional development days, and an opening and closing day.

The first holiday of the academic year, Memorial Day, falls on Sept. 4, followed by an additional no-school day on Sept. 15. Students and staff will then look forward to a fall break scheduled Oct. 2-6.

In November, students will receive two days off, Nov. 6-7, which have been reserved for professional learning days. A longer break is scheduled later in the month, Nov. 20-24. While students will enjoy a full week off, teachers will be engaged in professional learning days on the first two days of the break.

Winter break will span Dec. 18-29, including New Year’s Day off Jan. 1. An additional day off comes Jan. 15.

Spring break will run from April 1-5, giving students and staff a well-deserved rest as they head into the final stretch of the academic year.

The school year will officially conclude for students May 16, with teachers wrapping up their year with a professional learning day May 17.
