INEZ — As the 2023 season fast approaches, the Martin County Cardinals, under the guidance of Coach Josh Muncy, are primed to build on their successful 2022 run.

Last season, the Cardinals posted a 7-5 record, marking their best district finish since 2010. They clinched the runner-up spot in District 8 play and secured their first playoff victory in over a decade.

In the wake of the recent Kentucky High School Athletic Association (KHSAA) district realignment, the Cardinals will compete in Class 2A District 7. This district will feature four teams, a shift from the seven teams of District 8 last season. The District 7 lineup for the upcoming season includes Floyd County Central, which finished last season 1-10, Knott County, which ended 3-5, and Prestonsburg, which amassed an 8-3 record.

Coach Muncy reflected on the previous season.

“We lost a second-round playoff matchup to Breathitt County in a game where we were leading at halftime,” he said. “I believe this outcome has fueled a hunger within our players. They recognize how close we were to achieving so much more last season. Now they understand that a district championship and a deep playoff run are within our grasp.”

The team spent the offseason improving their strength.

“Their commitment in the weight room this offseason has been nothing short of astounding,” commented Muncy.

The 2023 Cardinal team faces the loss of key players Caleb Costa, Greydon Proctor, Dawson Mills, Christopher Phillips and Jaquan Rufus to graduation. Mills notably averaged over 100 rushing yards per game last season.

Despite these losses, the Cardinals boast significant talent returning for the 2023 season. Key contributors, such as Madden Miller, Brock Messer, Bryston Wells, Tate Crum and Noah Mollett, to mention a few, are expected to deliver powerful performances on the offensive front.

Messer will shoulder the runningback role.

“Brock had an outstanding junior season,” noted Muncy. “I anticipate him stepping up as a leader and forming a potent two-man run game alongside Madden Miller.”

Another standout player, Miller will assume the running back and fullback position.

“Miller is the team’s powerhouse,” said Muncy. “His relentless work ethic, impressive football IQ and exceptional leadership qualities have piqued the interest of institutions like the Virginia Military Institute.”

The offensive line will feature four returning starters: Crum, Wells, Mollett and Cory Parsely.

“This group is possibly the most athletic and sizable offensive line we’ve had in decades,” commented the coach. “Bryston Wells is one of the most athletically gifted big men in the area. He is quick off the ball and very hard to keep out of the backfield. He will cause a lot of problems for offenses this season.”

Corner position player Julian Stafford is touted as a disciplined coverage guy with a knack for tackling effectively on the edge. His game-changing pick 6 against Prestonsburg last season illustrates his potential impact on games.

Maddox Johnson will continue as the kicker on special teams, entering his second year in the position. Coach Muncy lauded Johnson, saying, “He wrapped up last season as a dependable extra point kicker.”

Expect the Cardinals to be formidable this season as they vie for the district championship.

“We are eager to delve into district play. We believe we let a district championship slip through our fingers last season, and our guys are eager to claim it this time around,” Muncy enthused. “Our out-of-district games are challenging and should adequately prepare us for postseason play. We aim to be battle-tested by November. Our team is thrilled to participate in the Pike County Bowl this season and ready to face heightened competition.”

The Cardinals opened organized practice Monday wearing helmets. Beginning July 22, players who have had at least five days in helmets only can practice in shells (shorts, helmets, shoulder pads). Beginning Aug. 1, players who have had at least three practices wearing shells can practice in full gear.
