MARTIN COUNTY — The Martin County Public Library’s summer reading program kicked off with a bang this year to bring community and education to local youths.

The program launched June 1 with an exciting visit from BARKer Farm and some amazing creatures. With the theme of “All Together Now” the program introduced youth to animals that would normally cause fear and educated them on the important role they play in the environment. These lessons helped children and adults alike learn that just because we may be afraid of snakes, spiders and birds that does not mean that they do not play an important role in our lives. This informative and engaging session allowed everyone to gain a deeper appreciation for these oft-misunderstood creatures.

Meanwhile, the Rufus Reed Public Library focused on a more hands-on approach, with the first day brimming with activities involving bubbles and foam designed to enhance fine motor skills.

Adding to the educational experience, both library branches set up live butterfly exhibits, allowing children to witness the captivating process of metamorphosis, starting with the caterpillar stage and continuing until they may be released.

The summer reading program also welcomed guest speakers.

Brandon Brown from the Kentucky Higher Education Assistance Authority taught the children about preparing for college and how to make higher education more attainable financially. Middle school students had a blast creating their own colleges and mascots during the session.

Amy Smith from First State Bank spoke about saving money, applying for a loan and spotting the difference between fake and real bills. Playing coin toss games and reading a special book about our banks and how they operate helped expand participants’ knowledge and life skills for the future.

The school district’s Summer Feeding Program holds a special place with the youth during summer reading. All children that participated in the program received a balanced meal each day.

“Thank you all for making our youth a priority and their summers memorable.”

As the last day of summer reading approaches – Thursday, June 29 – the library is gearing up at our Inez location. Come out at 1 p.m. for Kentucky Reptile Zoo, reading goal prizes and Kana Ice.

“We hope to see you at the library.”
