LEXINGTON — The raw and heartfelt musings of Pike County native Donnie Bowling can be heard in his newly released album “Work Yourself Out,” which became available on all major platforms May 16.

Traveling nurse by profession and musician by passion, Bowling, now residing in Lexington, presents an unapologetically honest exploration of the human psyche in this record. Traversing the landscape of self-doubt and personal growth, “Work Yourself Out” serves as a sonic manifestation of Bowling’s own journey.

Ironically, Bowling kept the album on the back burner for three years, haunted by self-doubt and trepidation over how the deeply personal narrative might be received.

“One day I was looking across my content board,” said Bowling. “I thought to myself, ‘It’s time to take my own advice and work myself out and release that record into the world.’”

The 10-track album is a series of vignettes from Bowling’s life, reflecting the universal struggle of being our own worst critics. Bowling addresses this internal conflict candidly, his lyrics resonating with a familiar sense of self-questioning that many of us grapple with. The album serves as a reminder of the liberating power of truth and self-expression.

“I believe that while this record is rather personal, it also leaves plenty of room to express and share things that many others may experience,” Bowling explained. “Love, loss, questioning your place in the world and if you are on the right road. I hope it can show a fix for those types of problems or experiences.”

Songs like “Path,” “Galaxy,” and “Talking Ya Down” encapsulate this introspective journey. From acknowledging the often overwhelming noise of fear, doubt and external opinions to taking leaps of faith despite the uncertainty, Bowling presents a multifaceted narrative filled with relatable life lessons.

Throughout the creation of “Work Yourself Out,” Bowling was forced to confront his relationship with criticism and external pressures. The impact of this struggle on his work led to a crucial realization.

“The pressure and criticism of previous efforts really jarred my writing process,” he admitted. “I just made a decision somewhere along the line to write for me now, write things that maybe I would need to hear at some point and maybe while doing that I can reach someone else.”

His partnership with Brett Higgins, the duo known as Brett & Donnie, has certainly had an impact on Bowling’s journey. While “Work Yourself Out” was already in its final stages during their initial collaboration, the chemistry and camaraderie with Higgins brought a positive influence on Bowling’s creative process. Their combined talent radiates in their recent release, “Shine Through,” an EP that Bowling describes as “more energetic” and “positive-driven.”

Bowling’s soulful sound is a unique contribution to the indie music scene in Kentucky, diversifying the rich musical tapestry of the Bluegrass state. Describing how he navigates his sound amid the established musical cultures, he said, “I wouldn’t say that I’m unique. I guess having those multiple sound personalities allows me to move in and out of many types of lineups and bills around the area while not pushing too far to one side and upsetting the music overlords.”

Growing up in Eastern Kentucky, the ethos of hard work was ingrained in Bowling. This ethos has not only influenced his life but also fueled his dedication to music.

“Many of my close friends can vouch for the fact that I work tirelessly at my craft,” Bowling said. “Sometimes I give so much to it that I, too, don’t get to enjoy the other things that people my age are out doing.”

As Bowling shares his odyssey of self-discovery through “Work Yourself Out,” the hope is that it will serve as a beacon for listeners finding themselves in rough waters, reminding them that they are not alone.
