INEZ — Dennison Davis, the valedictorian of the Martin County High School 2023 graduating class, delivered a heartfelt and inspiring speech during the commencement ceremony May 26, 2023, at Cardinal Football Stadium.

In his address, Davis expressed gratitude for the memories and relationships formed throughout his academic journey. He encouraged fellow graduates to continue building strong connections as they move forward in life.

Reflecting on the journey that brought them to this momentous day, Davis reminisced about conversations with friends in elementary school, eagerly speculating about their graduation year.

“This felt like it was lightyears ahead,” Davis said. “But as I stand here today, I realize that it really wasn’t. They say that time flies by when you are having fun, and for me, that was the case.”

Upon learning of his selection as valedictorian, Davis was filled with joy, shock and relief.

“I was very relieved by the fact that the hard work had paid off,” said Davis. “Even with all the work put in for this individual award, I would not be up here today if it wasn’t for the help of others in my daily life, and for that, I am very thankful.”

Davis humbly acknowledged the role of his faith, stating, “First, I would like to thank the most important person in my life, who is my lord and savior Jesus Christ.”

The valedictorian expressed gratitude towards his family, recognizing them as his primary support system.

Davis thanked the teachers who had played pivotal roles in his academic journey, acknowledging their dedication and unwavering commitment to pushing students to reach their full potential.

Moving on to the realm of extracurricular activities, Davis highlighted the impact of two influential coaches in his life. The first was Marcie Hanson, Davis’s golf coach, who demonstrated trust and confidence in him while fostering his growth both on and off the golf course.

“As a shy 12-year-old boy with a very rough golf swing, I decided to try out for the golf team, and Mrs. Hanson took me under her wing,” said Davis.

Hanson’s support as a journalism teacher allowed him to pursue his passion for broadcasting, enabling him to leave his comfort zone.

Davis spoke of baseball coach Wesley Hager’s unwavering support. Hager challenged Davis to become a leader, both in sports and in life, for which Davis will be eternally grateful.

Lastly, Davis thanked his friends, affectionately known as “the boys.”

“You guys always have my back and I will always have yours,” said Davis.

Noting the exceptional nature of a valedictory speech, Davis said, “While this may seem like I just won an Oscar or a Grammy with all of these thank yous, I believe that it is much needed in a speech of this caliber.”

In closing, Davis encouraged fellow graduates to foster relationships and remain grateful as they navigate life.

Quoting John 13:7, Davis stated, “What I am doing you do not understand now, but afterward you will understand.” He urged his peers to trust God’s plan, find gratitude in every aspect of life and strive to impact others positively.

“You may feel as if you have nothing to be thankful for today, but God has a plan for each and every one of us. Be thankful for what you receive in life, strive to make a positive change in someone’s life, and you will find success in life.”
