Martin County softball goes 4-0 in final week

Martin County softball slid into the home stretch with four big wins last week before heading into postseason play. The Cards notched wins over Betsy Layne 10-0 on May 8, Floyd Central 7-1 on May 10, and concluded the regular season Saturday by sweeping a doubleheader from Knott County 10-0 and 13-4.

Young throws first career shutout

INEZ — Martin County shut out Betsy Layne 10-0 on “Senior Night” May 8 in Inez.

The coaching staff recognized seniors Bailey Dials, Kaley Maynard, Brynnalyn Smith, Hannah Stacy and Savannah Young and gave them gifts before the game.

Young got the win on the mound. The pitcher went seven innings, giving up two hits and zero runs while striking out four and walking two.

The Lady Cardinals scored three runs in the first inning. Bella Muncy led with a single, Savannah Young got plunked by a pitch, and the Bobcats gave up three walks.

Martin County picked up two runs in the third, one in the fourth and four in the fifth to end the game. 

Martin County had six hits in the game. Haley Robinson, Young, Sophie Harless, Muncy and Maynard all singled.

Hannah Mitchell took the loss for Betsy Layne.

MC knocks off FC

INEZ — Senior pitcher Savannah Young struck out 10 batters in Martin County’s 7-1 win over Floyd County Central at home May 10.

The Lady Cards took a 5-0 lead in the bottom of the third behind singles by Young and Bailey Dials and a double by Hannah Stacy.

Floyd Central scored in the top of the fifth, while Martin County added two runs in the fifth to set the final score.

Young pitched seven innings, surrendering four hits and one run while striking out 10 and walking one.

The Lady Cards tallied seven hits. Dials and Stacy both went 2-for-3. Stacy recorded a double and two RBIs. Haley Robinson, Brynnalyn Smith and Young each tallied one single. 

MC shuts out KC

INEZ — The brooms were out Saturday in Inez. Martin County swept both games of a doubleheader against Knott County 10-0 and 13-4.

Game 1

Savannah Young started on the mound for the Lady Cards in game 1 and pitched her second career shutout. Young gave up two hits and no runs while striking out four and walking one.

Gabrielle Slone took the loss for Knott County.

The Lady Cardinals recorded 10 runs to end the game in four innings.

Hannah Stacy doubled, while Bailey Dials, Bella Muncy, Savannah Young and Haley Robinson all recorded singles for Martin County.

Game 2

Young started her last home game in the circle for the Lady Cards in game 2, giving up four runs on four hits while striking out six for the 13-4 win.

Addison Conley took the loss for Knott County. She gave up eight runs on six hits while striking out two and walking two.

The Lady Cardinals had five hits. Kelian Jewell went 1-for-2 with a double, Kaley Maynard was 1-for-3, Young tallied one single, Sophie Harless was 1-for-3 with a single, and Bailey Dials was 1-for-3 with a single.

Gabrielle Slone led the Comets going 2-for-3.

Martin County concluded the regular season with an 8-13 overall record and landed the No. 4 seed in the 57th District Tournament. The Lady Cards were set to square off Monday (May 15) against the No. 1 seed Johnson Central at Paintsville High School.
