State police investigating murder in Pike County

PHELPS — A murder Friday morning is believed to have been between two cousins. Police say the shooting in Phelps in southern Pike County left one man dead and another in jail.

Sterlin Justice, 19 years old, of Stopover, was arrested for murder and lodged in the Pike County Detention Center with no bond.

William Working, 34, of Phelps, was pronounced dead at the scene by the Pike County Coroner’s Office.

Kentucky State Police Trooper Michael Coleman said the incident occurred around 7:30 a.m. in the 3500 block of State Highway 194 in the community of Jamboree.

Police arrested Justice three hours later on Pecks Branch Road.

Pike County School District Superintendent Reed Adkins said Phelps High School was on lockdown from 9:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. because the shooting was in close proximity.

KSP Trooper Coleman said a nearby nursing home was also on precautionary lockdown.

Detective Mahala Lewis is leading the investigation. KSP troopers from Post 9 assisted at the scene.
