WILLIAMSON, W.Va. — The Mingo County Sheriff’s Department is cracking down on the never-ending battle against illegal dumps throughout the county.

The department is using social media, specifically Facebook, to post pictures of dumps in hopes of getting tips or leads on individuals participating in this illegal activity.

These eyesores seem to show up in warmer weather.

“It’s the same thing we’ve done for the past couple years: If we receive a complaint about an open dump I’ll send an officer out to try to locate information in the trash,” Mingo County Sheriff Joe Smith said. “We don’t have the manpower or time to track everyone down, so we typically post the information on Facebook asking the person to contact us as soon as possible to get the situation resolved.

“There have been several times the people have paid someone to haul their trash off, and they’ve dumped it over the hill or up a hollow instead of legally disposing of it at a landfill,” Smith added.

The MCSD has issued several citations and ordered the culprits of the illegal garbage dumps to clean them up in past cases where they found names in junk mail in the garbage.”

“We are just doing what we can to try to keep the county clean,” the sheriff said.

Contact the MCSD on Facebook or by calling Monday through Friday 304-235-0300.
