Lady Cards mercy-rule Prestonsburg, drop two others

Martin County Lady Cards mercy-ruled Prestonsburg to break a 12-game losing streak last week. The Lady Cardinals dropped two district games 5-4 to Magoffin County and 10-5 to Paintsville, then bounced back Friday at home to send Prestonsburg home with a 17-1 whipping.

Below is a recap of all three games.

Lady Cards lose heartbreaker

SALYERVILLE — Martin County was about to pull off an upset of district rival Magoffin County only to see it fly over the left field fence in the bottom of the eighth inning May 1. The Lady Cards lost 5-4.

Pitcher Savannah Young was three outs away from a shutout going into the bottom of the seventh inning. Martin County was up 4-0.

Heartbreak struck when Magoffin County rallied for four runs to knot the score 4-4.

The Lady Cards gave up a walk to start the inning, committed an error and gave up a single as the Hornets scored their first run of the game. The Hornets scored again on a sacrifice fly, cutting the Lady Cards lead 4-2. With two on and two outs, pitcher Jaden Williams went yard, knocking in two runs to tie the score 4-all.

The Martin County defense held on, sending the game into extra innings.

In the bottom of the eighth, Magoffin County freshman Abby Barnett hit a walk-off dinger over the left field fence to seal the Hornets’ comeback win.

Young took the loss for the Lady Cards. The pitcher went eight innings, giving up five runs on eight hits, walking three and striking out two.

Williams pitched eight innings for the win, giving up four runs on 13 hits, walking two and striking out three.

Martin County tallied 13 hits. Hannah Stacy went 3-for-3, Bella Muncy went 3-for-4, Young went 2-for-5, Brynnalyn Smith went 2-for-4, and Kaylee Endicott, Addison Duncan and Haley Robinson all knocked a single.

Magoffin tallied eight hits. Barnett and Williams each knocked a home run, Katie Carty went 3-for-3, and Kayleigh Lemaster went 3-for-3.

Lady Cards fall to Paintsville

INEZ — Martin County Lady Cards fell to the Paintsville Tigers 10-5 in a game Thursday at home.

The Tigers struck first, scoring one run in the first inning and one in the top of the second to go up 2-0.

The Lady Cards battled to score one in the bottom of the second behind a single by Haley Robinson and a double by Bailey Dials to cut the deficit to 2-1.

Paintsville erupted for five runs in the top of the third to go up 7-1.

Martin County fought back and brought four runs home behind a leadoff single by Bella Muncy, a single by Kaylee Endicott, a double by Savannah Young and a double by Smith to cut the deficit to 7-5.

Paintsville added a run in the fourth and two in the fifth to pull out the win.

Young was on the hill for the Lady Cardinals. Young gave up 10 runs on 14 hits while walking three and striking out one for the loss.

Laney Bledsoe started on the mound for the Tigers giving up five runs on 11 hits, striking out six and walking two for the win.

Martin County tallied 11 hits. Smith went 2-for-4 with one double, Muncy went 2-for-3, Hannah Stacy went 2-for-3. Young went 1-for-3 with a double. Endicott, Dials, Robinson and Addison Duncan collected singles.

Paintsville tallied 14 hits.

Lady Cards mercy Prestonsburg

INEZ — Martin County Lady Cards ended a 12-game losing streak by defeating the Prestonsburg Lady Cats 17-1 in three innings May 5 at home.

The Lady Cards wasted no time getting control of this one. They erupted for four runs in the first inning, six in the second and seven in the third to finish with the 17-1 victory.

Savannah Young started on the mound for the win, giving up one run on one hit while striking out six and walking one.

Martin County tallied 14 hits. Bella Muncy went 3-for-3, Hannah Stacy went 2-for-2, Bailey Dials went 2-for-2, and multiple players recorded singles for the Lady Cards.
