Martin County tennis teams split pair

Martin County boys and girls tennis teams got off to a 1-1 start. The teams lost April 10 to Johnson Central and rebounded April 11 to defeat Paintsville.

Coach Josh Penix had a good number of team members show up this season as the program continues to grow.

“I am really proud of the improvement I am seeing with my team,” Penix said. “We are young and continuing to improve.”

JC vs. MC

WARFIELD — Johnson Central visited Martin County April 10 at the homecourt in Warfield.

In boys’ singles action the Cardinals fell to Johnson Central in set play 8-4.

No. 1 seed Caleb Horn won his set 6-9. Brayden Cook, the 2-seed, lost 6-1. Bryon Marcum, the 4-seed, won his set 6-0. Bryson Dials in the 7-seed defeated his opponent 6-4. Levi Howell, the 3-seed, lost 6-2. Jeremy Music, the 5-seed, lost 6-2. Liam May, the 6-seed, lost 6-1 and 8-seed Connor Dials lost 6-2.

In boys doubles the 3-seed team of Marcum and Music won their set 6-0. The 1-seed team of Cory Jarrell and Levi Howell lost their set 6-2. Playing the 2-seed, B. Dials and C. Dials lost 6-2. Rounding out doubles, the 4-seed duo of Corey Endicott and May lost 6-4.

In girls action Johnson Central defeated the Lady Cardinals in set play 6-3 to win the match.

Playing the No. 1 seed, Tamara Workman won her set 6-2. Candace Spaulding playing the No. 6 seed defeated her opponent 6-3. No. 2 seed Caitlyn Horn lost 6-0 and No. 3 seed Kennedy Mills lost her set 6-0. Mills and Spaulding played two sets each, losing the second set 6-0 and 6-1.

In girls doubles action playing the 2-seed the team of Tori Crum and Hailey Damron won their set 6-4. Playing the 1-seed the team of Workman and Horn lost their set 2-8. Rounding out doubles play in the 3-seed spot the team of Aaliyah Cline and Katie Maynard lost 6-2.

MC vs. PHS

Martin County boys and girls tennis teams swept the Paintsville Tigers on the road April 11.

The boys won 5-0 and the girls 7-0.

“Our hard work is paying off and we are seeing results,” Coach Josh Penix said. “Everyone is continuing to work hard and improve their skill sets. We have a few tough tests ahead of us next week playing Pikeville at home on the 17. Pikeville is probably the region favorite to win it all. Lawrence County away on the 20 who is right there with Pikeville and Knott County at home on the 21 who I believe we can compete with at full strength.”

In girls singles action playing the number one seed Caitlyn Horn won her set 8-0. The 2-seed Kennedy Mills won 6-2, the 3-seed Tori Crum won 6-0, the 4-seed Dakota Ward won 6-3, the 5-seed Kennedy Mills won 6-0 and rounding out singles play Aaliyah Cline won her set 6-1.

In girls double play the team of Horn and Crum won 6-0.

In boys’ singles action the No. 1 seed Caleb Horn won his set 6-0, the 2-seed Brayden Cook won 6-0, the 3-seed Bryon Marcum won 6-0 and the 4-seed Connor Dials won 6-0.
