BOE shines spotlight on students, staff

INEZ — The Martin County Board of Education had plenty to recognize during the student and staff spotlight segment of its meeting Monday in the central office.

Schools Superintendent Larry James presented certificates on behalf of the BOE to several outstanding achievers.

First in the spotlight, Martin County High School students Erickson Mills, Chase Childers and Brayden Cook accepted certificates honoring their acceptance to the Craft Academy at Morehead State University.

Head Start family advocates Stacy Morrison and Michelle Cook stood in the light for their recent outstanding reviews.

The BOE honored Eden Elementary’s academic team and coaches for a stellar performance in the Region 29 Governor’s Cup. The team finished fourth overall, fourth in quick recall and second in future problem-solving.

Quick recall team members are Kennedy Mills, Olivia Maynard, Liam Ferrell, Emma Fletcher, Belle Ray, Peyton Crum, Keilin Whitten and Deacon Muncy.

Future problem-solving team members are Emma Fletcher, Brody Jewell, Lexi Bowen, Braxton Pack and Peyton Crum.

In individual categories, Olivia Maynard placed fourth in science and fifth in language arts. She also placed first in the regional science fair in the lumped category of engineering and mathematics.

Kennedy Mills finished fourth in composition.

Coaches include Lora Hale, Jessica Jewell, Jennifer Vanover and Shaina Horn.

Finally, the BOE honored student Macy Hillman for winning the AARP Grandparent of the Year Essay Contest.
