Horn picks up first wins as head coach

PRESTONSBURG — Coach Josh Horn picked up his first wins as head coach of the Martin County softball team in a doubleheader Saturday in Prestonsburg. The Lady Cardinals caged Prestonsburg 19-4 in four innings, then finished off West Carter 17-7.

“We had a great week of practice going into the games,” a happy Coach Horn said. “I was excited about how everyone responded after being challenged all week. We have a great group of girls on this team that have bought into team ball.”

Below is a recap of the action from the Stonecrest field.

Martin County 19, Prestonsburg 4

Martin County pushed three across the plate in the first inning, then busted the game wide-open scoring 12 in the second to go up 15-2.

Prestonsburg scored two in the second inning.

Martin County added a run in the third and three in the fourth to go up 19-4 and mercy the Blackcats.

Zoie Hinkle got the start and pitched two innings in the circle for the win. Hinkle gave up two runs on one hit while walking two and striking out three.

Kayleigh Osendott relieved Hinkle and gave up two runs on two hits over two innings.

Hannah Stacy singled twice. Brynnalyn Smith drove in two runs on two singles and scored one. Bella Muncy singled twice, drove in two runs and scored three times. Savannah Young scored three times, had one hit and knocked in one. Bailey Dials hit a double and scored two runs. Zoie Hinkle doubled and drove in two runs.

Zoey Mollett and Kaylee Endicott scored three runs each, Lena Hale scored two runs, and Sophie Harless and Addison Duncan scored one run each.

The Lady Cardinals scored 19 runs on nine hits and had 10 stolen bases.

Martin County 17, West Carter 7

The Lady Cardinals snagged West Carter 17-7 in the second game of the doubleheader Saturday.

Savannah Young got the start in the circle. She gave up seven runs on seven hits and recorded three strikeouts for the win.

The Comets scored four runs on three doubles and a single to go up 4-0 in the first inning.

Martin County scored one run in the first on a triple by Bella Muncy and a double by Hannah Stacy to cut the lead to 4-1.

Brynnalyn Smith tagged a triple in the second inning but was left on base.

West Carter went three up and three down in the second.

The Lady Cards came alive in the third inning and pushed six runs across the plate on five hits. Muncy and Young singled, and Stacy, Smith and Bailey Dials all doubled.

West Carter added two runs in the fourth.

The Lady Cardinal bats were on fire as they scored four more runs in the fourth on five hits. Keilan Jewell tripled while Zoie Hinkle, Young, Sophie Harless and Smith all singled to put the Lady Cards up 11-6.

West Carter scored one in the sixth on one single and two errors by the Lady Cardinals.

Martin County added seven more runs on hits by Stacy, Young, Harless, Jewell, Dials and Muncy.

The Lady Cardinals scored 17 runs on 22 hits.

Smith drove in five runs, Sophie Harless drove in three, and Dials, Jewell and Hinkle each recorded one RBI each.

The Lady Cardinals moved to 2-1 on the season.
