WARFIELD — Martin County District 5 Magistrate Ronald Workman has been busy getting spring cleaning done at Warfield Park.

Workman collaborated with county code enforcement officer Paul McCoy, jailer Bill Preece and the BOE to clean up the tennis courts and basketball court and give picnic tables, bleachers and buildings a fresh coat of paint.

Park community center board members provided cooked meals each day for the workers.

“It’s nice to see people working together as a team to help with the upkeep of our facilities for our kids and community,” Workman said. “We still have a lot more to do in the coming days. The tennis season is already here and warm weather is on the way.”

The fiscal court paid for supplies.

“Big thanks to [Martin County Judge/Executive Lon Lafferty] and the deputy judge Carolea Mills,” said Workman. “They are always out in the front making our parks safe and pretty for our people.”

As part of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s High Obesity Program initiatives in Martin County, in collaboration with the University of Kentucky’s Cooperative Extension Office, tennis courts will be renovated following the high school tennis season.

Cracks will be repaired with a joint compound, courts be resurfaced with a colored sealant, and new striping will be applied to the courts.

The program will also provide new tennis court nets, replace a broken net suspension system, and install windscreens on the existing chain link fence. Benches with shade awnings adjacent to tennis courts will be added as well.

Workman said the county plans to add pickleball courts to the park.
