Free nursing academy open to rising juniors, seniors

Applications close March 31

PIKEVILLE — SOAR is offering rising high school juniors and seniors an opportunity to attend a free two-week Appalachian Nursing Academy July 9-21 at the University of Pikeville.

Thirty students will be chosen for the free program that runs July 9-21, but they must apply by the deadline March 31.

SOAR is partnering with the Kentucky Department for Public Health’s Office of Health Equity and the University of Pikeville to host the second-ever academy. 

Student attendees will receive the following:

• Housing at the University of Pikeville

• Three meals a day

• Interactive programming with workshops, presentations, shadowing, mentorship, tours, etc. 

• $1,500 scholarship to further your education

• Trips to see and experience regional attractions and activities

To be eligible:

• You reside in one of Kentucky’s 54 Appalachian counties

• You are an incoming junior or senior at your high school

• You do not have to have any prior experience related to nursing to apply. Your interest is all that matters.

You will need the following:

• A signed parent/guardian notice and permission form.

• A completed application.

• A copy of your unofficial transcripts

• One letter of recommendation. You’ll provide their contact information in your application. We will contact those listed for a confidential recommendation.

Important dates:

Applications will close at 11:59 p.m. March 31, 2023.

According to SOAR, initial acceptance offers will go out at the beginning of May.

Selected students must participate in a year-long mentorship program following the academy.
