INEZ — Chloe May (#30), Sophie Harless (#21), and the Cardinals Junior Varsity team are the Mountain Citizen Players of the Week.
May and Harless are members of the Lady Cardinals basketball team. They come off the bench for the Lady Cardinals as freshmen and hold down the guard/forward positions. Both can shoot from beyond the arc and drive to the lane to get the bucket.
May is a threat on defense with her height. She had a hot shooting week during the JV games making five 3-pointers each game for two games in a row. She carried that shooting over to the varsity game and knocked down a big 3-pointer in crunch time for the Lady Cards in their victory over Elliott County. May finished with five points in the Elliott County win and four in the Pike Central game.
She is the daughter of Brandon and Jennifer May.
Harless is a rebound collector and gives the Lady Cards a lift each time she steps on the floor by knocking down a shot, grabbing a rebound or making a hustle play.
Harless has shown her shooting range ability in the past couple of JV games by knocking shots down beyond the arc. Her talent carried over to the varsity game when she knocked down a big 3-pointer in the win over West Carter. She also entered the Elliott County game and helped the Lady Cards by adding four points to the scoreboard.
She is the daughter of Nathan and Amie Harless.
Martin County Cardinals JV basketball team finished runner-up in the 15th Region JV Invitational. The Cards went to Prestonsburg High School to compete in the tournament that included eight JV teams.
The squad entered the tournament as defending champ and came off an undefeated 2021-2022 JV season.
They opened the tournament with a first-round win against Lawrence County 59-48, then defeated Prestonsburg in the second round with a score of 47-24. They faced undefeated Shelby Valley in the championship game that came down to the wire and lost 33-31.
