WARFIELD — The Martin County Middle School Band and Choir have a busy schedule ahead.

On March 23, the Martin County Middle School choirs will participate in the Kentucky Music Educators Association (KMEA) District 9 Choral assessment at Belfry High School in Pike County.

During this event, the seventh grade and eighth grade choirs will each be performing for a rating on their memorized concert pieces in addition to their performance on a sight singing selection where the choirs will be asked to perform a piece they’ve never performed before.

Ms. Miranda Johnson, the music teacher, is anticipating both choirs will receive an overall distinguished score.

The Martin County Middle School Bands have several events in the coming months.

To kick off the busy band season, students can volunteer to audition for the KMEA District 9 Middle School All-District Band. These auditions will take place at Shelby Valley High School March 21. Students will perform two preselected excerpts at this event, a major and chromatic scale of the audition panel’s choosing, and a short sight-reading excerpt.

If students are selected for the honor band on this day, they will travel to the Ramada Inn located in Paintsville to participate in the honor band. This will take place April 24 and 25. Students will learn music with the best middle school musicians in the KMEA District 9 area and perform a concert April 25. The concert will also feature the District 9 High School Jazz Band. The concert will take place in the Ramada Inn and is free to the public.

The Martin County Middle School bands will also participate in the KMEA District 9 band assessment April 11 at Pikeville High School. Like the choral assessment, seventh and eighth grade band members will perform two concert selections and sight-reading a new piece of music for a rating.

The public can attend both the choral and band assessments free of charge.
