PIKEVILLE — As the tradition has been for many years at the Pikeville Medical Center, staff waited patiently to see what expectant parents would give birth to the first baby of the new year, which is a special honor for a tiny bundle of love. However, the first baby of 2023 at Pikeville Medical Center waited until 1:35 a.m. Jan. 2 to arrive.
Remington Joe Lester entered the world weighing in at 7 lb., 2.6 ounces and measuring 21 inches long.
He is the son of proud parents Desary Young and Bobby Lester and was delivered by Dr. Tiffany Thompson.
“He’s perfect. Days away from his due date, he decided to pick his own birthday and chose to be the Eastern Kentucky Advanced Women’s Care Center Baby New year,” said Thompson.
Dr. Hayley Trimble gifted Baby New Year with a handmade quilt. According to Thompson, Trimble started the tradition last year.
Trimble made a birthday cake for the family and thanked them for letting her team be a part of the memorable event.
“We appreciate you,” said Trimble.
As the medical facility has done in the past, all medical expenses surrounding the baby’s birth that are not covered by insurance will be waived.
