Hello Cardinal Nation! This is Alexis Hale and Matthew Linville here to give you the latest on what’s happening at MCHS. In this week’s news we will discuss Christmas in the Mountains, JAG NSLA, the Patten Leadership Institute, the MCHS Talent Show, Spirit Week and MCHS Athletic!

This past week 15 members of the Patten Leadership Institute (PLI) visited Martin County High School. Named after former state governor Paul Patten, members of the PLI visit schools around southeast Kentucky in search of students with a drive for entrepreneurship. Students here at MCHS were given a chance to perform presentations for the group, including examples of what our classes teach on the ATC side of the school. ATC principal Chad Williams was also given a chance to take the group from the PLI on a tour of the ATC.

From Dec. 14 until Dec. 17, Mrs. Marcie Hanson and JAG state president Sophie McCoy traveled to Washington, D.C., for the JAG National Student Leadership Academy (NSLA). While on this trip, the two were given the opportunity to meet congressmen Hal Rogers and Brett Guthrie, visit the Arlington Cemetery, attend leadership sessions with other State Officers, and go on a tour of the D.C. area.

On Dec. 3, JAG students participated in multiple activities during the Christmas in the Mountains festival. The 14 participants were: Bailey Dials, Emilia Ek, Kaley Maynard, Marlee Grayson, Addison Sweeney, Kaylee Jude, Andrew Wilson, Chelsea Jude, Grace Caldwell, Jaylee Deskins, Kaitlyn Maynard, Erickson Mills, Mali Fletcher and Joanna Hung.

This coming week we have the MCHS Talent Show, where students will have the opportunity to showcase their talents. The Friday before Christmas break (Dec. 16) begins, students will be able to show off their singing, rapping, dancing and many other exciting talents.

These past two weeks have been very eventful for MCHS athletics. The Lady Cards basketball team won a game that went into overtime by 3 points Saturday at Hoopfest, then matched that with a big win against Betsy Lane on Monday at home. They also won Friday against Shelby Valley at home, followed by another home game win Saturday over Belfry.

The boys basketball team faced Cordia on Saturday, Dec. 3, where the boys had a dominating win. On Tuesday, the boys team traveled to Perry Central High School to face Breathitt County in the WYMT Food City Mountain Classic. The boys fought hard in this very close game but fell short 50-47. They won over Hazard on Saturday at Perry Central High School.

The wrestling team had a big meet, finishing eighth out of 20 schools. Brock Messer, Weston Jude and Julian Stafford all finished third in their weight classes.
