Lady Cards knock off Chapmanville

INEZ — The Lady Cards came out of the gate pressing and knocked off Chapmanville 65-56 in the Zip Zone Classic played Saturday at Martin County High School.

Martin County jumped on the Lady Tigers scoring 23 points in the first quarter. When the horn sounded to end the frame, the Lady Cards were in command 23-8.

The second quarter was much the same as Martin County finished the half with a 40-17 lead.

The Lady Cards added 25 points in the second half to set the final score.

Junior sensation Katie Marcum chalked up her first double-double of the season with 23 points and 12 boards for the Lady Cards.

Junior Laken Williams finished the night with 21 points, five boards and five cookies while handing out four assists.

Freshman baller Brooke Marcum added 10 points, three boards and three cookies.

Alyssa Allen played a great floor game with five points, eight boards, eight assists and five steals.

Finishing out the scoring, Sophie Harless added two points and four boards and Tamara Workman and Hallie Mills added two points each.

Twelve players saw action in this victory. The Lady Cards handed out 17 assists and grabbed 47 rebounds.

Alaira Evans led the Chapmanville Lady Tigers with 23 points. Chloe Thompson scored 13 points, Jaden Mahon eight, Hollee Blair eight and Daizi Farley four.

“We jumped out early and never looked back,” Lady Cards coach Robin Newsome said. “We played a lot of kids and shared the ball really well with 17 assists. Chapmanville had a good-sized team. It was a good win.”

The Lady Cards opened the season Monday at home against Betsy Layne (see the story in this edition of the newspaper). They travel Saturday to play in the Marshall County Hoopfest.
