INEZ — A 14-inch main water transmission line ruptured Friday morning near the Martin County water treatment plant in Inez, forcing schools countywide to send students home early.

The outage also caused government offices, public libraries and local businesses to close for the day.

Water service was off for a few hours while crews worked to repair the leak.

Martin County Water District issued a boil water advisory Friday afternoon for 1,250 customers “due to the risk of bacteriological contamination” from the leak.

The advisory was still in effect Tuesday evening for the Inez area from the Buck Creek water tank east of the city to the Marcus Wells water tank west of the town.

Customers along this area, including all routes, hollows and branches, should boil all water used for drinking or cooking, bringing it to a rolling boil for three minutes before using.

According to MCWD’s alert, the boil water advisory will remain in effect until test results have shown the water to be of acceptable quality.
