FRANKFORT — While the results are concerning, lawmakers and analysts are not surprised by the Kentucky Department of Education’s state assessment results released Tuesday. The state’s results are in line with results seen in other states.
KDE Commissioner Jason E. Glass released a statement attributing the poor statewide performance to setbacks caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.
“As expected, the COVID-19 pandemic has had a profound impact on our students and our schools as they continue to recover from the interrupted learning that occurred over the past two years,” said Glass. “There will be no quick fix for the challenges our students endured during the pandemic. It will take time and resources.”
The color-coded performance ratings issued by the Kentucky Department of Education have five levels: Red (lowest), orange, yellow, green and blue (highest). Performance levels are an aggregation of “all available state indicator data,” including state assessment performance, educational opportunities available to students, school safety and disciplinary activity and indicators like graduation rate.
The average rating for elementary, middle and high school programs throughout the state was yellow, a medium rating. Only 226 of Kentucky’s 1,267 schools received a green rating, and only 98 received a blue rating.
Martin County High School, Martin County Middle School, Inez Elementary School and Warfield Elementary School each received orange ratings, while Eden Elementary received a yellow rating.
Likewise, Floyd County Schools also received an average rating of orange for their elementary, middle, and high school programs.
Pike County’s high schools received an average orange rating, while elementary and middle schools received an average yellow rating.
Johnson County Schools received an average yellow rating.
Paintsville Independent High School was rated green, while Paintsville Independent Elementary received a yellow rating.
