INEZ — Brock Messer and Laura Hale are members of the Martin County football and soccer teams, respectively. For their efforts last week, they are the Mountain Citizen Players of the Week.

Brock Messer rushed for 302 yards in Martin County’s homecoming win over East Ridge. He scored six touchdowns in the 57-22 victory.

Messer opened the game with a 74-yard kickoff return. For his fifth touchdown of the game, he sprinted downfield for a 66-yard carry. His sixth TD was a 38-yard carry.

Messer plays multiple positions on the field. On this night, East Ridge had no answer for the two rockets beneath him that he used to rush across the turf at running back.

Messer has moved to sixth in the 2A class in the state in rushing and fifth for scoring. His performance pushed Martin County into the No. 1-ranked team in rushing.

Laura Hale has been a force all season. Hale scored at least four goals in four straight games to round out the regular season. This past week at Morgan County, she booted in four goals and assisted on two in an 8-1 win over Morgan County.

Hale is ranked 23rd in the entire state of Kentucky with 32 goals scored. Only six players ranked above her have played in the same or lesser number of games than she has.

She ranks ninth in assists with 23 and 14th for total points with 87.
