INEZ — The Martin County youth 5-6th-grade team came close to a win against Floyd Count Saturday. The Cardinals fell 8-6 on the cold, rainy afternoon in Inez.

The Jaguars had the ball on their own 10-yard line and Chucky Leonard forced a fumble that was recovered by the Cards.

After a loss of 10, Brody Jewell took the handoff and ran wide left into the endzone.

The Cards were stopped just short of the two-point conversion and Floyd County would go on to win.

“I’m a beast,” Jewell said after his touchdown. “We played defense well and did better on offense today.”

Leonard spoke on his team’s performance.

“Like coach said, we just need 11 players on that field, and we can play,” Leonard commented. “Our main thing is to work on blocking. I had one of my best games today. They were such a good team, and I can’t even be mad right now. That was our best game ever.”

Martin County coach Casey Leonard said, “We lost by two, but our team did great. I would take this team right here and do it all over again. They played their hearts out and stripped the ball so many times today. I can’t say a negative thing about them. I loved playing in the rain. It’s a great challenge for these boys.”
