BETSY LAYNE — Martin County Middle School football team avenged their earlier season loss with a 6-0 victory over Betsy Layne on the road Thursday night.

Quarterback Jarred Haney broke loose for a 40-yard touchdown run to lead the Cards to a win.

Brody Howell and Jeremy Bentley had possibly their best defensive performances of the season. The Cardinal defense allowed no points from the Bobcats.

Martin County coach Wesley Hager talked about the shutout.

“We installed a new defense this week,” Hager said. “Our kids really bought in and we had a great defensive practice this week. I had a great feeling getting off the bus and it really translated into the game.

“They had the ball in the red zone five times and never scored. Our kids played with grit and heart and left it all out on the field,” added Hager. “We finally put all parts of the game together and beat a very big and physical Betsy Layne team that beat us 20-14 earlier this year. I couldn’t have been more proud of my team.”

The Cards will host Paintsville at the Rock on Saturday.
