INEZ — Martin County Middle School Lady Cards went 1-1 against Paintsville and Betsy Layne last week.
The Cards A-team defeated Paintsville 36-24.
Annaleigh Davis and Alyssa Maynard put up double digits for the Cards backcourt.
Davis continues to dominate in the lane. Guards can’t keep up with her and she fires in a pretty floater consistently in-between defenders.
She scored in all four quarters and dropped a scorching 17 points to lead the Lady Cards.
Maynard fired in five buckets for 10 points.
Desirae Gullett pitched in four, Jane Smith added three, and Ava Farnham put in a shot for two.
The B-team pulled out a win with a 24-19 final score.
Sisters Caylee and Chloe Moore led the squad with 8 and 7 points, respectively.
Aaliyah Carter and Lexi Cline added two points apiece. Bailee Scott nailed a free throw.
“Paintsville was our best performance to date. It was all around basketball on defense and offense. It was really a team effort,” Martin County Coach Boo Newsome said of the game.
Floyd County’s undefeated Betsy Layne defeated the Cards at the dome 35-15.
Gullett went 5-6 at the charity stripe and nailed a trey for eight points Thursday evening.
Davis had four inside the paint and Farnham had three points on the night.
Coach Newsome was proud of the fight until the final buzzer.
“We just need to be more mindful on offense and settle down to get shots out of our offense,” she said. “They didn’t stop though. They hustled until the end even when everything wasn’t going our way. We will get back to practice and be prepared for Saturday games,” Coach Newsome concluded.
Cline had all five points for the B-team contest.
