WARFIELD — The Martin County Middle School Lady Cards started their season with a grinder against Magoffin, a blowout win over Johns Creek, and a 13-point victory against Dorton.
The following is a recap of MCMS action:
Magoffin
The Cards opened homecourt play Aug. 23 with a 28-22 win against a Magoffin team that refused to go away.
Annaleigh Davis started out hot hitting a trey and two buckets in the first quarter. Alyssa Maynard knocked down two free throws, but the Cards would end the first down 9-10.
Desirae Gullett dropped two jumpers, with Davis adding two more and Ava Farnham nailing one from behind the arc to tie the game 18-18 at halftime.
The Ladies tightened their defense and held the Hornets to one in the third quarter. Maynard hit three from the charity stripe and Jane Smith knocked down a shot to take a 25-19 lead.
Magoffin hit a 3-pointer, but Farnham hit a key shot from downtown to hold off the Hornets for the win.
Davis led the way with nine points. Farnham had eight including her 3-pointer to seal the game. Maynard was 5-6 from the line for the evening. Gullett tickled in four and Smith added two points.
“It was an impressive win for us. We had never played with each other before this season and didn’t have a lot of experience together,” Davis, the Cards’ point guard, spoke of the game.
With Martin County’s only points in the final quarter, Farnham said, “We worked together as a team.”
“We talked on defense and we shared the ball. It felt good to be out there and get that tough win,” Maynard said.
Martin County Coach Boo Newsome was on the sideline for her first career home game.
“We don’t lose in our house. We don’t let anyone come in and take our floor.”
Newsome continued, “They battled back in the second quarter. Once I told them to slow the ball down, they executed it. To be in a late game situation and handle it like they did, I was impressed.”
