Lady Cards win 31-28 overtime thriller

WARFIELD — Martin County Middle School Lady Cards won a 31-28 overtime thriller Aug. 30 against Greenup County behind clutch shooting from Desirae Gullett and Alyssa Maynard.

Farnham continued her hot shooting from the game before with a 3-pointer to open the game. Maynard hit a FT and Gullett added a bucket. Greenup had the lead to end the first 9-6.

Greenup stood on top in the secondafter both teams tallied seven points. Gullett and Davis scored four with Maynard adding three more to pull the score to 16-13. 

Maynard stayed consistent through the third by knocking down two tough buckets in the paint. Davis tickled in a floater to keep her team within three to begin the fourth quarter.

The Cardinal defense was the key to the game. 

Greenup inbounded with 1:48 to go in the fourth and dribbled down the middle of the floor. Gullett’s quick hands knocked the ball into Maynard’s possession. 

Maynard drove to the left of the basket, made a spin move to the center of the lane and put up a right-handed floater that bounced around the rim before falling in. The Cards took the lead 26-25 with over a minute remaining.

Greenup went to the line and went 1-of-2. Gullett and Cheyenne Spaulding came up with two steals within the last minute to send the game to overtime. 

After a back and forth in OT, Davis forced a turnover on the sideline with a minute left.
