INEZ — The Cardinal football team hosted Floyd Central on Friday for a warmup scrimmage game to prepare for the season. Floyd Central defeated the Varsity team 14-7 and Martin County JV won 7-6.
Chris Phillips scored off a 70-yard rush into the endzone to tie the game up 7-7.
With the ball on the 16-yard line, Bryston Wells brought down a runner for no gain. But with 1:24 left on the play clock, Floyd Central scored the final touchdown of the game.
MC’s Weston Jude brought his team down the field but didn’t have enough time to put another on the board.
The junior varsity club played one quarter against the Jaguars.
With 54 seconds to go and the ball on the 5, Aiden Horn swooped right with plenty of room to score the game-winning touchdown.
Central made their way downfield quick and scored with 23 seconds.
FC went for two and Martin County’s defense stopped the conversion to win 7-6.
Martin County Coach Josh Muncy liked what he saw and is ready to start the season.
“I thought we improved Friday night compared to the week before at Lawrence County. We were down two starters due to injury and had some guys step in and play really well,” Muncy said.
The Cards officially kick off their season Aug. 19 at home against Leslie County.
