TOMAHAWK — A domestic violence incident that involved minor injury to a child ended with both parties arrested late Monday in Tomahawk.

Martin County Deputy David Adams was dispatched to a residence on Mary Perry Road to investigate a domestic abuse complaint. Upon arrival, Adams was told a verbal argument escalated to a physical confrontation between Donald Ray Cornette, 52, and his girlfriend Cheryl Rogers, 46, allegedly over Rogers’ 10-year-old daughter. 

Rogers told Adams that Cornette had struck her on the arm and face and kicked her daughter on the leg. Adams noted that Rogers had visible bruises on her upper limb and swelling and redness on the right side of her face and her daughter had a bruise on her leg.

Cornette told Adams that Rogers struck him twice with a set of garbage pickers, once on the right leg and once on the palm of his hand. 

Cornette was arrested on charges of fourth-degree assault (domestic violence), minor injury and fourth-degree assault (child abuse). Rogers was also arrested and faces one charge of fourth-degree assault (domestic violence), minor injury.

Both were transported to the Big Sandy Regional Detention Center in Paintsville. Rogers was released after posting bail and Cornette remained incarcerated Tuesday.
