WARFIELD — Wendy Skates and her crew from the Blanchester, Ohio, area set up shop Friday and Saturday at the Warfield Park Community Center and blessed 65 children with haircuts and over 170 with clothing and school goodies.

Skates and crew came to Martin County to serve with Appalachia Reach Out.

“God is good,” Skates said in a Facebook post. “The smiles get me every time. What a wonderful team with hearts to serve the Lord. Thank you to all those that donated to help make this happen.”

ARO director Dwayne Mills expressed his gratitude for the Ohio crew and community center board member Denise Dillon Chaffins.

“You are making a difference in Warfield for your community,” Mills said. “We love you.”

Chaffins shared a story about a young man who touched her heart.

“We gave out suckers and Popsicles to the kids, and as he and his family were leaving, I told them to take some extra suckers,” Chaffins said. “He started to get one, and I said, ‘Honey, just get you a handful and take with you.’ He said, ‘I don’t want to be greedy.’ …You don’t hear that much from kids, and I thought some adults could learn from him.”
