Free food opportunities this week in Martin Co.

CITIZEN STAFF REPORT

INEZ — Residents can get free food this week in Martin County during three separate events.

Facing Hunger Mobile Food Bank will distribute food from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Wednesday at the Pigeon Roost Community Center.

Appalachia Reach Out Food Pantry will distribute food from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Wednesday.

On Saturday, His Garden will distribute fresh produce from 9 a.m. to noon at Turkey Creek Church of the Nazarene.

Pastor Derek Catron said volunteers would harvest Thursday and Friday evenings to prepare for the distribution.

“It is first come, first serve, and all we need is your name,” Catron announced. “We’re ready to bless our neighbors.”

The 4,500 square-foot garden is funded predominantly by Grow Appalachia Martin County.

Grow Appalachia is a grant program through Berea College that allocates funds to partner sites like the Martin County Cooperative Extension Office to increase food security in Appalachian communities.

The church is located at 1798 Tug River Road, close to the Turkey Fire Department and the intersection of Routes 908 and 292.
