INEZ — The Lady Cards soccer team got off to a busy start with scrimmaging, conditioning, volunteering and hosting fundraisers.
The team hosted a 50s dinner and movie July 23 at the Collier Center, an event aimed at earning funds for the season. The girls dressed in 50s attire to serve guests and showed the classic “Grease.”
The girls also volunteered to relocate a collection from the former public library building to the Collier Center.
After Huntington High canceled a scrimmage, the team played an in-house scrimmage.
Soccer coach Steven Gauze is pleased with the team’s work in practice thus far.
“At this point, I’m very happy with their effort,” Gauze said. “We’ve been focusing on fitness which has been difficult with the record heat we are having.”
The team returns eight starters from last season.
“They are stepping up,” said Gauze. “They’ve been helping with the younger girls and encouraging them during practice.”
The Lady Cards will host a team camp July 29 and 30. There will be two sessions each day, 8-10 a.m. and 7-9 p.m.
