INEZ — Martin County Cardinals girls soccer began practice last week with Coach Steven Gauze conditioning his team to get them back in shape.

The girls started their workout by running 2 miles. The rest of the practice included kicking, agility and speed drills. Coach Gauze planned to have conditioning all week before beginning their official practice Friday.

The Lady Cards are coming off a 9-7-1 season.

The team’s second-leading scorer Sophia McCoy will be returning. She had 20 goals and 14 assists last year.

Marlie Fletcher will be back between the bars as the goalkeeper. She had 62 saves and three shutouts last season.

Martin County will host a scrimmage Thursday at The Rock as they take on Huntington HS.

The team also has a dinner and movie fundraiser planned for July 23 at the Collier Center.

The Cards will host a team camp July 29-30 before they travel Aug. 6 to Stonecrest for a panorama.

The regular season kicks off Aug. 9 at East Carter.
