After the Whistle: Remembering Brad Stafford

I watched a video this week that Alex Green created about the 189 lb 2010 state championship in wrestling. Josh Muncy and Ryan Kelly were invited to speak about the late Brad Stafford, and their words were truly touching.

I was lucky enough to know Brad, as I was good friends with his sister, Antoinette. He could always make me laugh. He felt like everyone’s big brother. The boy looked like a grown man but had the carefree spirit of a child.

Brad was tied 6-6 in his state championship match. One unlucky move pinned him, but if not for that, Brad was on his way to winning it.

One football game always stands out is when Sheldon Clark beat Belfry at The Rock. It feels like yesterday. If memory serves me correctly, Adam Dials broke free on the sideline to score the winning touchdown. I’ve never seen that place come alive like I did that night.

Ryan Kelly and Adam were possibly the best running backs I’d seen in Martin County. They both were also spectacular wrestlers. Brad was the toughest guy that Martin County had ever seen. There’s no questioning it.

As the years pass, new players come and go. A few become unforgettable, and Brad Stafford is one of those.

We’re reminded that sports aren’t only about winning. They’re about the people that make lasting impacts on our lives off the field.

Those blessed to know Brad Stafford in his short time on earth will never forget him.
