INEZ — Hall of Fame Coach Robin Newsome and the Martin County High School girls basketball team hosted the Cardinal Ball of Fame Summer Camp June 6-8. Over 50 campers attended at the Martin County High School gymnasium.
Each day consisted of instruction from Coach Newsome, her assistants Alison Scott and Boo Newsome, and former and current high school players. Campers participated in various drills, including ball-handling, shooting, agility, team building and speed work.
The camp featured free throw and hot shot competitions each day. Scores were tallied up on day 3 of camp by the coaching staff. A girl and boy from each age group with the highest score received an award.
The following are winners of the free throw competition: Grade K-1 Addy Horn and Lincoln Runyon – Grade 2-3 Paige Stafford and Parker Stafford – Grade 4-5 Aubree Muncy and Brock Fields – Grade 6-8 Lexi Cline and Corbin Burgess.
The following are winners of the hot shot competition:
Grade K-1 — Remy Williams and Lukas Mays.
Grade 2-3 — Harper Runyon and Rocco Maynard.
Grade 4-5 — Emily Mills and Hunter Phelps.
Grade 6-8 — Desirae Gullett and Mason Messer.
A few campers also had the highest “one-day total” for the hot shot competition. These players were Nova Mays, Emily Marcum, Blaine Williams, Kennedy Mills and Brody Jewell.
Coach Newsome was thrilled with the turnout this year.
“They were the best group,” Newsome said. “Everybody had great attitudes and they never complained. These kids showed up and worked hard.”
The team presented each camper with a basketball and a T-shirt at the conclusion of the camp.
“I appreciate my staff and the team for how well they’ve worked with the kids this week,” said Newsome. “I’m very proud of them.”
Newsome thanked everyone in attendance before huddling them up with a “1, 2, 3, Go Cardinals!”
