PAINTSVILLE — Seniors Skyla Messer and Brittany Thompson played their final game as a Martin County Cardinal last week. The softball team traveled to Johnson Central (22-13) May 24 for the 57th District Tournament and held on for five innings before falling 10-0 against the Eagles.

The Cards couldn’t squeeze in a hit in Johnson Central’s no-hitter.

Thompson provided several highlights for the game. In the bottom of the first, she pulled in one of her four flyballs for the evening to close out the frame after allowing no runs.

JC heated up in the bottom of the second, scoring four runs. Thompson caught another high ball in centerfield for the third out.

Zoie Hinkle entered the game at relief for pitcher Kayleigh Osendott. An Eagles home run over the left-field fence in the third extended the score 6-0. With the game still within reach, Kaylee Endicott tracked down a pop-up in right field to bring her team back out to bat.

The top of the fourth was 3 up, 3 down for MC. Central came out swinging with three hits and four runs. Martin County couldn’t respond in the fifth, which concluded their season.

Brittany Thompson recently received a scholarship to continue her career in softball and basketball at Alice Lloyd College.
