“Most men will proclaim every one his own goodness: but a faithful man who can find?” Proverbs 20:6
In this season of political posturing, the truth of this proverb should be a reminder to us all that, while words are important, the character of a man or woman is the real tale of the tape. It’s easy to say you are for a cause or will stand up for what is right; it’s an entirely different and more difficult task to exhibit the fortitude to do what is necessary to bring needed change.
Character counts. It always has, and it always will. The good news for believers is that we have been given the character of God, placed in our born-again spirits when we committed our lives to Christ, and it’s this character that can help us overcome in this life.
The last 10 weeks we have written of our higher calling in the Lord—the calling of a Christian. We are called to conform to the faith of Christ, and specifically, to allow those beliefs to mold and shape our thoughts, words, deeds, and progressively, our character. Once we receive Christ as our Savior, our next steps in our walk with him should be the development of the character of God in our lives. It’s not the easiest task for us, but it is a God-given responsibility and one that we should take seriously. A Christian of good character is one of the greatest witnesses of the reality of our Savior.
