“For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Not of works, lest any man should boast. For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works, which God hath before ordained that we should walk in them.” Ephesians 2:8-10
Did you realize that one of the reasons you were created was so that you could do good? It’s true! You were born to be a “do-gooder”! What in days gone by was used by mean children as a slur toward those that tried to live right is a very reason for our existence. God re-created us in Christ Jesus so that we could continue the good Jesus began and make the world we live in a better place.
For several weeks now we have written of our higher calling in the Lord—the calling of a Christian. We are called to conform to the faith of Christ, and specifically, to allow those beliefs to mold and shape our thoughts, words, deeds, and progressively, our character. Once we receive Christ as our Savior, our next steps in our walk with him should be the development of the character of God in our lives.
As daunting as that task may seem, God has already given us the tools we need to accomplish this task by depositing these character traits in us when we said “Yes” to Jesus. We just need to allow the Lord to grow it in us. In Galatians 5:22-23 we are reminded of what is in us, the “fruit of spirit” deposited by the Holy Spirit Himself. In reality, this is the character of God, and living this character should be the goal of all that are “born again.”
