Martin County’s own Boo Newsome became the University of Pikeville’s first-ever golfer to be named NAIA Player of the Week.
The University of Pikeville Women’s Golf team recently competed in the Mid-South Conference Spring Classic at Bear Trace at Cumberland Mountain Golf Course in Crossville, Tennessee. Newsome and Sophie Beverly both competed as individuals for the Bears, with no team score being recorded.
Newsome did not pick up a golf club until her freshman season at Sheldon Clark High School.
“I started my freshman year of high school. That was the first time I ever picked up a club. I played basketball from the time I was born, but when Mom got out of coaching and my sister graduated, it didn’t feel right to play anymore. Basketball is a family sport and I didn’t feel right playing without them there. I also played softball in high school,” Newsome said.
